How It Works: Home Alarm System

A home alarm system is a device used to protect a home from burglary or intrusion. The alarm is set off with unauthorized entry is detected. In general, these devices consist of a control panel, sensors, interconnections and an alerting system. The sensors, which are used to monitor door and window areas, can detect intruders by infrared motion detectors, microwaves, ultrasound, magnetic or electric fields, or vibrations. Most sensors are directly or wirelessly connected to the control panel.

Some of these alert systems are designed for a single purpose- fire or burglar protection. Other systems offer a combination of protection. Systems may be connected to surveillance programs that can record activity around the home. Overall, these devices may be small and self-contained or complicated and multi-zoned.

Sensors may be found inside or outside of the home. They can detect presence. The homeowner may set off the sensors. In this situation, the owner can deactivate the alarm, usually by pressing the combination code they assigned to the system. Indoor sensor types include passive detectors, ultrasonic detectors, microwave detectors, photo-electric beams, glass-break indicators, and smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide detectors. Outdoor sensors, which are usually installed around the perimeter of the home on structures such as fences, may include inertia or vibration sensors, fibre optic cable, passive magnetic field detection, microphonic systems, microwave barriers, taut wire fence systems, h-field, and e-field.

An alarm output can be remote, local or a combination of both. Local types do not have monitoring; however, they include sounders and lights that are beneficial during an evacuation or to scare off potential burglars. Remote versions come in different configuration types. They connect a predetermined monitor to the control unit.

What occurs when this device is set off varies. It may depend upon the system model, defaults set, area that was triggered, time of day, and several other factors. The monitoring center will typically verify that the alert is valid, not false, by contact public officials, property owner, landlord or other listed contact.

These systems can be reconfigured or deactivated by authorized personnel. There are several ways this can be done. For example: code combination, fingerprint, retinal scan, badge, and other methods. When an individual fails to correctly authorize their identity, the system may set the alarm off or the device may be locked out so that multiple codes cannot be tried. There are many different features and configurations that are used to control the response of the system.

A false alarm can be costly. Law enforcement fees may be issued in the case of multiple false calls. These systems can be easily triggered and if they are falsely going off because of a malfunction or other circumstances, the issue should be handled immediately. Failure alarms occur when the device fails to set off, usually because of a technical issue. Some systems can detect when there is a problem within the devices such as phone circuit issues, low batteries, or loose connections.

There are a variety of high and low-tech models available for home security. These devices will range in price and are usually installed by professionals. A home alarm system is typically used to prevent intrusion or burglary. It may also include features to warn of fire.
